Elizabeth Aitken

Dr Elizabeth Aitken obtained her PhD ‘Malaria in pregnancy: immunity and a mechanism for low birth weight babies’ at the University of Melbourne. Following this she worked briefly on immunity to malaria at the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research and then at the University of Edinburgh. From 2012-2014 she worked at the University of Sao Paulo looking at pulmonary malaria and also Plasmodium spp. infection in wild monkeys. In 2014, Elizabeth started work with Professor Stephen Roberson’s laboratory at the Peter Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne. In Stephen’s lab Elizabeth is working on measuring a large variety of functional and physical properties of the antibody response towards the parasite. Within ACREME Elizabeth will work on identifying new immune measures of protection from malaria beginning with a focus on malaria in pregnancy.
