Professor Leanne Robinson of Burnet Institute recently spoke with Madlen Luckner (Nature Communications), reflecting on her work toward malaria elimination and the evolving challenges and opportunities in the field.
An investigator with ACREME, Leanne is a leading expert in malaria epidemiology and implementation research across the Asia-Pacific, with a particular focus on Papua New Guinea.
“Countries in the region that have been declared free of human malaria, have highlighted the importance of political will, sustained domestic financing and a systems wide, multi-sectoral approach. These countries have integrated all the essential pillars needed for malaria elimination–community engagement, effective case management, vector control and surveillance as a core part of their health system…  I believe there needs to be greater investment in genuine partnerships that strengthen local leadership, foster cross-country knowledge exchange and ensure the inclusion of community voice in decision-making.”
